Well hello! I'm Tom. I've been working as an international photojournalist and news photographer for over 8 years now. I got into photography through my love of travel and adventure, spending 6 months in Northern India putting together my first photography project 'Oh India'. I have since worked and lived in Italy, Spain, England, Scotland, Indonesia, New Zealand, Canada and now back to Sydney. My work has been featured in publications such as The Guardian, The Telegraph, Suitcase Magazine, Lodestars Anthology and many more. Travel photography is all about curiosity, attention and interaction, and I put this tour together to teach people the tools necessary to be able to approach and capture those iconic moments of travel. This tour includes a variety of environments and activities to practice and challenge your photography, as well as multiple meetings and lessons providing opportunities to learn, share and receive feedback on your work, ensuring you will leave feeling more confident about your photography, with a collection of powerful images.
Vietnam is a country of contrasts — ever-moving yet serene, ancient yet ever-changing. This trip is a deep dive into its rhythm, designed for photography lovers who want to go beyond the typical snapshots and truly connect with their surroundings. Hanoi’s streets pulse with movement, Sapa’s landscapes shift with the light, and Halong Bay’s waters create endless reflections to play with. Whether capturing the artistry of incense-making, the expressions of market vendors, or the grandeur of mountain peaks, every frame tells a story. Through a mix of photography workshops and plenty of photography opportunities, let's share our passion for photography while experiencing Vietnam’s magic firsthand.
-Welcome to Hanoi, Vietnam’s vibrant capital where old-world charm meets modern energy.
-After a swift group transfer to the hotel and check-in, take some time to soak in the city's electric atmosphere.
-This evening, we’ll gather for a welcome dinner at a local restaurant, where you’ll get your first taste of Vietnam’s legendary cuisine and connect with fellow travelers who share your passion for photography and adventure.
-After breakfast at the hotel, meet your guide and fellow photography leader in the meeting room. Ensure you have your camera gear and notepad ready. We will have a briefing about the places we'll visit, highlighting the cultural significance and photo opportunities, as well as an introduction to travel photography lesson where we'll learn about photographic techniques and approaches.
-Our first stop is the historic Temple of Literature, a stunning 11th-century Confucian temple with incredible architectural details and serene courtyards.
-After lunch, we'll head to Quang Phu Cau Incense Village, where thousands of brightly colored incense sticks create an explosion of color. It's an absolute dream for any photographer.
-If time permits, we’ll wander the Old Quarter, a mesmerizing blend of ancient streets, bustling vendors, and golden-hour light bouncing off colonial facades.
-Rise early for a morning photography session at Hoan Kiem Lake, where locals practice Tai Chi against the backdrop of the iconic Ngoc Son Temple.
-If time allows, we’ll visit Long Bien Bridge, an aging iron structure steeped in history.
-In the afternoon, we'll embark on a scenic drive to Sapa, a highland region known for its misty landscapes and ethnic villages.
-After checking into our hotel, the evening is yours to relax and prepare for tomorrow’s mountain adventures.
-Today, we'll ascend to Fansipan Mountain, the 'Roof of Indochina,' via cable car, capturing breathtaking panoramic views of rolling mountains and clouds below.
-Afterward, we'll explore Muong Hoa Valley, home to terraced rice fields and traditional villages. We'll focus on landscapes and environmental portraits, learning how to tell the story of the land and its people through your lens.
-Take a scenic drive to Nam Cang Village, one of Sapa’s most untouched areas. Known for its intricate embroidery and warm hospitality, this village offers rich storytelling opportunities.
-In the evening, we’ll gather for another photography workshop, refining techniques to enhance composition, light, and narrative. There is also an optional meet-up with the group leader to review your photos thus far.
-Pay a visit to Bac Ha Market, a vibrant, once-a-week gathering where locals trade everything from handwoven fabrics to livestock. The market is street photography heaven — raw, authentic, and bursting with colors.
-In the afternoon, we'll transfer to Lao Cai for lunch, where we’ll have some free time to explore.
-When the sun sets, hop on a sleeper train that will take us to Hanoi.
-After we arrive in Hanoi, we’ll meet our guide and enjoy a Pho breakfast like the locals before we travel to Halong Bay. Here, emerald waters and towering limestone karsts set the scene for an unforgettable experience.
-On arrival, board our overnight cruise, and enjoy a leisurely lunch on deck before exploring the bay at our own pace.
-As the sun dips below the horizon, we’ll gather for a sunset photography session, capturing the ethereal beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
-Wake up to the tranquil beauty of Halong Bay, and enjoy a peaceful morning on board. Enjoy a Tai Chi session, or explore all that the cruise has to offer.
-After breakfast, we'll disembark and return to Hanoi for our final evening together.
-We have time this evening to meet up and review our photos from the trip, sharing some final work if we choose.
-Celebrate our journey with a farewell dinner and photography wrap-up, sharing our favorite images and stories from the trip.
-Enjoy a leisurely morning in Hanoi before checking out. Depending on your flight schedule, take this last chance to capture final glimpses of the city’s energy — perhaps a quiet coffee moment or a bustling street scene.
-A group transfer to the airport marks the end of our adventure. I hope the trip has offered you some photography takeaways, and I can't wait to see your photos from the experience. Safe travels, and see you on the next photography journey!
