Details

Day 1

Mucho Gusto, and welcome to Guatemala! Today’s expedition will take you from Guatemala City to the tranquil Lake Atitlán

Our expedition to Guatemala begins here! Welcome to a land of volcanoes, vibrant visages, and the birthplace of chocolate! Our first view of Guatemala will be from the plane as we arrive in busy Guatemala City but our first stop on this trip will be the serene Lake Atitlán, a flooded volcanic crater. This beautiful and remote destination will provide us with scenic views of looming volcanoes and stunning shots of verdant hills and Mayan villages. Once we've checked-in, you'll have a free afternoon to relax in the shade of the mystic mountains, enjoy the hotel's amenities, or even have a welcome siesta. After we get to know each other and enjoy a fiesta of food at dinner, we can take in a glorious sunset view over the Lake, settle down for a great night's sleep, and prepare for a day of discovery.

Day 2

Boat across Atitlán Lake and absorb its breathtaking scenery

I don’t drink coffee but you can start your day off right with a cup of Guatemalan coffee made locally in Panajachel's volcanic soil coffee plantation. Day 2's quest will have us on a chartered boat on the shimmering waters of Lake Atitlán. We’ll embark on a morning tour of the local waters, taking in the sights from the heart of this flooded volcanic crater. Crossing the lake, we'll arrive at the tranquil San Juan La Laguna, an artistic shoreline village specializing in Mayan Traje weaving and serving up excellent snacks. We’ll enjoy the rustic charm of this traditional Guatemalan town before we head back to the hotel for a free afternoon enjoying the sun. Later, we’ll have another fantastic feast at the hotel and get ready for another day of adventure.

Day 3

Float away in volcanic hot springs before heading to Antigua

Get ready for a day of luxury! After breakfast and check-out, we'll be taken to the famous Fuentes Georginas hot springs at the Zunil Volcano where we’ll kick back and indulge in the amazing thermal waters first discovered in 1902. It’s the perfect way to get us relaxed and ready for another day of travel! We'll be heading to Antigua today, a Volcano-enclosed city and Guatemala's former colonial capital until a devastating earthquake in 1773. Once we've checked-in, we'll have some time to see some of the city's ruins, preserved or rebuilt colonial buildings, and fascinating museums. We’ll come back together for dinner later and try some of the local exports. Rum isn't just for pirates — it's one of Guatemala's most popular drinks! It’s recommended we try some award-winning Zacapa Centenario. Maybe we can venture off to a rooftop bar or a night out on the town? If so, we can stop by Antigua Brewing and head downstairs through the red phone-booth to U'lew Speakeasy for lively music, drinks, and good vibes all-round. A wonderful welcome to Antigua!

Day 4

Enjoy the spa, have a free day in Antigua or ascend the mighty Pacaya Volcano!

On day 4, we have lots of options so you can choose what feels right for you. You can stay at the hotel spa, explore Antigua or prepare for an epic journey to conquer Pacaya Volcano! Pacaya Volcano first erupted over 23,000 years, this active behemoth lends itself to an excellent hike — it’s an optional add-on if you're up for the challenge. This guided trek (see add-ons) will take you around the base of the mountain via the lava fields and then to some heat vents perfect for marshmallow-roasting or Guatemalan chocolate-melting. You can add this volcano tour separately if you feel brave enough. There's no better feeling than defeating such a goliathan of nature and getting the pics to prove it! If volcano hikes aren’t your thing, you can have a relaxing day at the hotel spa. Want to do both? Don’t worry. Your spa pass is for the whole day! We’ll try to catch a Happy Hour at Aqua Rooftop, with fantastic views of the city and stellar cocktails and end the day with another fantastic traditional Guatemalan meal to prepare for another day of adventure on our last full day!

Day 5

Tour Antigua's sights on your final full-day in Guatemala

After breakfast, we'll be taken on a guided city tour of Antigua to discover its archeological and architectural secrets. We’ll revel in the sight of the baroque La Merced church, get our photos taken under the iconic Santa Catalina Arch, and investigate the ruins of the old cathedral. We can’t leave without shopping! So we’ll head to Colores de Tierra, Mercado del Carmen, Nim P'ot, or Casa del Jade. If you've selected the optional add-on activities, we’ll do ATVs and a cacao workshop (see add-ons) after lunch. We’ll go off-road on an exciting ATV tour before a cacao workshop to learn about Guatemala's famous exports. In the cacao workshop, we'll be introduced to cacao cocoa powder — the Guatemalan plant that gives us chocolate, among many other things! We'll get the chance to sample some in its raw form before being treated to the delicious chocolate it can be made into! Our trip to the Land of the Eternal Spring may almost be over but there's still time for us to get some last-minute sightseeing and relaxation in Antigua, room to pick up souvenirs we've been holding off on, or try the local rum! We'll find some rum, and more, at the Antigua Cerveza Rooftop or Aqua — both excellent locales to watch a sunset and toast to the end of our trip. Salud!

Day 6

Your Guatemalan expedition has come to an end — Adiós, for now!

I know our time in Guatemala will be magical and we will be sad to leave. We will have learned a lot about the local cultures and customs that make Guatemala unique. We will enjoy our final breakfast before we head back to the airport. We say our goodbyes and prepare for our next travel experience together as we all head back home safely!
